Andrew Vanderschoor
Andrew was born in 1967 in Hobart, Tasmania, and is currently based in Sydney, NSW. He paints Australian landscapes in oil and is a contemporary painter working in a loosely expressionist style. His work is a personal response to the natural environment, seeking to evoke an emotional connection to place. Andrew uses dense, unthinned oil paint applied with heavy brushwork to create texture and presence. He paints on Masonite board, chosen for its archival qualities, being manufactured from hardwood without chemical bonding agents.
Andrew’s practice is driven by a deep passion for the Australian environment. The beauty of harsh light, extreme temperatures, vast open spaces, and unique vegetation — combined with a seemingly timeless landscape — has shaped a continent that is both raw and resilient, and continues to be a central influence in his work.
Over the past 25 years, Andrew has established and contributed to a range of art projects and workshops in Sydney and Bourke, NSW. Through these initiatives, he has worked with communities to encourage young people to develop their creative practice and engage with the visual arts.
